Why Join?
Sexual health after prostate cancer treatment is often overlooked, yet it has a profound impact on quality of life for patients and their partners. This full-day, guideline-based workshop provides clinicians with practical, hands-on training to confidently address these issues in daily practice.
Designed for oncology and urology professionals, nurses, allied health providers, and other clinicians working directly with prostate cancer patients, the program combines evidence-based guidance with real-world communication tools.
Learning Objectives
By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:
- Describe the biopsychosocial impacts of prostate cancer therapies (surgery, radiation, androgen deprivation) on sexual health.
- Utilize the 5As Communication Framework to initiate and guide sexual health discussions with patients and their partners.
- Apply core communication skills (active listening, normalization, empathy) in sensitive counselling conversations.
- Assist patients and partners in developing strategies to maintain intimacy and sexual well-being after treatment.
- Identify barriers to addressing sexual health in clinical practice and develop strategies for implementing guideline-based care.
What is the 5As Communication Model?
The 5As framework (Ask, Advise, Assess, Assist, Arrange) is a structured, patient-centered approach that helps clinicians feel confident initiating and guiding conversations about sexual health:
- Ask – Open the conversation by inviting patients and partners to share their concerns in a safe and non-judgmental way.
- Assess – Explore individual needs, expectations, and readiness for support or treatment
- Advise – Provide clear, evidence-based information about changes in sexual function and possible interventions.
- Assist – Offer practical strategies, coping tools, and referrals to specialists when needed.
- Arrange – Ensure continuity of care by scheduling follow-ups, sharing resources, and connecting patients to peer support.
This framework will be woven throughout the workshop and practiced in role-play scenarios.

- Expert-led training based on The Guidelines for Sexual Health Care for the Prostate Cancer Patient.
- Three interactive modules on the impacts of radical prostatectomy, radiation therapy, and androgen deprivation therapy.
- Experiential role-play and group exercises to practice skills in a supportive environment.
- The 5As Communication Framework (Ask, Assess, Advise, Assist, Arrange) applied directly to clinical conversations.
- Think Tank Session: becoming a change agent, overcoming barriers, and developing strategies for your own clinic.
- Follow-up quarterly calls to support continued learning and implementation.

Travel Stipends
Up to 15 participants will receive a USD $1,250 travel stipend and be recognized as regional ambassadors for sexual health in prostate cancer care.
